Resilient Design
Designed to adapt to rising sea levels
As rising sea levels pose a danger to coastal areas worldwide, floating buildings are viewed as a solution to this threat.
The Lake Union Float Home is an example of a floating home that addresses this challenge. Located on Lake Union in Seattle, the two-story home was built on a foam-encased concrete hull manufactured in Vancouver, BC and is moored in a float home community accessed by a community dock.

The Challenge
Tethered to fixed piles, the float home continually adapts to fluctuating water levels.
Seismically, as the float home does not have foundations fixed to the earth, it offers stability during an earthquake.
Located in a marine environment, the exterior is clad in low maintenance phenolic panels and patina induced western red cedar siding.
